In response to a recent news article published by Premium Times, the National Population Commission (NPC) is actively addressing allegations of illegal collection of N2,000 administrative charges by its officials for attestation of birth certificates.
The NPC asserts that only the official fee of N2,000, payable through bank remita, is legitimate for the issuance of attestation of birth certificates. Registration of births for individuals aged 0 to 17 years is entirely free, and the same applies to the registration of deaths.
Expressing disapproval of any form of gratification demanded by its staff during duty, the Commission condemns the alleged unprofessional conduct highlighted in the newspaper report. A comprehensive investigation is currently underway to thoroughly examine the accuracy of the news report, and appropriate actions will be taken against any staff found responsible.
The NPC remains committed to upholding transparency and accountability in fulfilling its mandate of providing demographic data for national planning. To further this commitment, the public is urged to report any instances of cash payment demands or gratification to the Commission through its social media platforms or contact the NPC Hotlines at 07000236787 and 08137686139.
